About City Pillar Shrine
According to legends, city pillars needed to be erected in new cities as an expression of power. This prang-shaped shrine houses the first city pillar built by King Rama I in 1782 when he moved the capital city to Bangkok. Right after that, he had the shrine built. King Rama IV erected a new city pillar and moved it to a renovated shrine together with the old one.
