About Herodes Theatre
This 5,000-seat amphitheater was built in 161 AD and funded by Herodes Atticus, a wealthy Greek aristocrat, to honor his late wife. It was destroyed 100 years after the construction was finished and remained in ruins during the Ottoman occupation, but it was restored several times since then. Musical performances have taken place here since ancient times and since 1957, the theatre has hosted performances by the Athens Festival. Luciano Pavarotti, Frank Sinatra, and also the Athens State Orchestra performed here. Visit the site during summer and catch one of the many events taking place here.
